Various binding style tutorials (resources from this excellent guide from the University of Toronto Libraries)

  • Pamphlet Stitch  
    An easy stitch for beginners to learn the technique of sewing together a few folded sheets of paper.
  • Saddle Stitch  
    A basic booklet stitch.
  • Coptic Binding 
    A flexible binding without a spine, the book is able to lay flat open.
  • Japanese Stab Binding  
    Single sheets bound together instead of folded sheets (signatures). Allows for more freedom with different threads and a variety of papers.
  • Long Stitch Binding 
    A more complicated stitch, but with the opportunity for creative binding patterns on the spine.
  • Simple Hardcover Book
    Also known as a "case binding"
  • Protective Book Box
    Tutorial for making a protective box to encase your books.

  • Book Press  
    A useful project to create a press to clamp down the pages of the book, especially when doing a perfect binding.
  • Perfect (Adhesive) Binding  
    A very simple binding requiring no sewing.
  • Double Fan Adhesive Binding  
    A more complicated version but sturdier than perfect binding. Also uses the press.
