LIBRARY GUIDE TO Getting Started with Nursing Research

This guide is intended to assist students who are unfamiliar with conducting research using the electronic tools and resources available through the OU libraries, such as students returning to academia after a number of years, transfer students etc.

STEP 1 - View the introductory video Getting Started which provides an overview of how to get started with your nursing research.  

STEP 2 - Get familiar with the Nursing Research Guide
Here you will find links to important resources for your research and writing.

STEP 3 - View the CINAHL tutorials and learn how to search for Nursing literature. CINAHL is the primary nursing database. You will be required by your professors to search for literature using this resource.

STEP 4- View the Retrieving Articles using the Get it! link tutorial to gain a better understanding of how to locate the full-text of articles you find in the databases.

STEP 5 - Familarize yourself with APA style and available guides. APA is the required citation style for the School of Nursing. It's best you purchase the APA Style Manual. Kresge Library has several copies that can be used in the library but not checked out. There are also very good online guides linked from the Nursing Research Guide.

Plagiarism Tutorial - Writing scholary research papers is an important part of the Nursing program. This tutorial will give you a greater understanding of academic integrity and plagiarism, how and when to use sources, how to quote, paraphrase, and cite. Many faculty members are now requiring you complete this tutorial. Upon completion you have the oppotunity to print a completion certificate.

Understanding Peer-review - Professors will emphasize that you need to only use scholarly, peer-review literature in your research. These tutorials will help clarilfy what peer-review means.

APA tutorial available from the APA website has a very good overview of writing in APA style.
