LIBRARY GUIDE TO EndNote: Overview of the Citation Manager

EndNote is a citation manager available to Medical Library students via two of the computers in the Medical Library Collaborative Study Room as well as a laptop that can be checked out by Medical Library students. EndNote required a purchases license to use, but is a robust and customizable citation manager that some students might prefer.
Quick Video Tutorial for Using EndNote
Beginning Tips
  • Use the export feature on a website and select either .ris or .end format, or if there is batch exporting, choose the Send To option and then Citation Manager, which will send the batch as a library file that you can then open within EndNote for a full list of your citations
  • Double click your imported citation and select Edit on the right side
  • If you were unable to find the full text article on the website where you exported your citation, try going to References > Find Full Text and EndNote will attempt to find a full text version of the article
  • If you've imported a large batch, you can delete duplicate citations by selecting Library > Find Duplicates
    • At this point you will be presented with a citation selector that will allow you to pick which of the duplicate citations you want to keep
Advanced Tips
  • You can use Mendeley to pull a citation from a website that might not have an export feature, which you can then import into EndNote - for more information on this technique, refer to this video -
  • You can change certain fields within the EndNote citation frame to your own customization. To do this, go into the EndNote menu, click Preferences > Reference Types > Modify Reference Types. This allows you to change any field within the citation, and if you save the preference, it will keep this setting in future libraries
