Finding and Using eBooks at Kresge Library

Kresge Library offers thousands of eBooks to the Oakland University community at no charge to the patron. To see what we have available, the best place to start is with our eBook Collections Guide

Here, you can find information on our eBook collections. The left side of the guide will provide you with a list of all our current eBook collections. If you are looking for an eBook within a certain subject, you can also browse eBooks by subject collections, which are shown on the right side of the guide.

  1. Finding eBooks by Subject

If, for example, you wanted to find a business eBook, you would click the subject Business & Economics. You will be brought to a search page where you have the option to enter a search term, or you can browse subject headings related to Business and Economics.

If you want to conduct a search, enter your term in the highlighted yellow box and click Search. Once you do that, your related results will be displayed below. The example here uses “market” as the search term. As you can see, not only do the records in the results show the book information (title, author, etc.), but also which eBook database collection the book can be found. If you see a book you want to view, click on the database link provided below the record information.

If you are accessing the collection from outside of the university campus, you will be prompted to login using your netid information.

Once you are signed in, you will be directed to the eBook from the collection database. Depending on the collection, you will have different download and printing options available to you. In this example, you can choose to download the entire book PDF, or you can download individual chapters. You may be prompted to enter your OU netID information again before you can view the eBook.

  1. Finding eBooks in Library OneSearch

From the library homepage, enter your search into Library OneSearch and press enter to see your results. By default, you are given results for all materials related to your search. At the top of each result in grey text is an indicator for the type of material; in the example below, you can see there is a mix of book chapters and books in the first few results. If you want to narrow down your results, you can use the filters on the left side under the Availability heading and check and apply the option Available online.

Below the material’s citation information is an “Availability” status - this tells you if the item is available and how you can get it. Available Online means you can access it from one of the databases.

If you click Available Online, it will open the record and show you what database collection you can access it from. Click on the database link, and you will be directed to the database that the collection is in.

If you are accessing this from outside of the university campus, you will be prompted to login to the network with your netid.

Once you are signed in, you will be directed to the eBook or eBook chapter from the collection database. Depending on the collection, you will have different download and printing options available to you. In this example, you can choose to download the entire book PDF, download individual chapters, or read it online. You may be prompted to enter your OU netID information again before you can view the eBook.
